Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
The Diamondbacks all of a sudden have one of the best rotations in baseball, which leaves Banda at Triple-A waiting his turn, for now. His 94-mph fastball is at least a plus pitch from the left side, but his curveball and changeup are still average offerings, at best. He has the potential to be dominant out of the bullpen, particularly against left-handed hitters. However, he has the size (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) and durability (145-plus innings in three straight seasons) to stick in the rotation. His numbers at Triple-A don't inspire confidence, particularly his 5.92 ERA in Reno. He struggled with his command at times and had to deal with the harsh pitching conditions of his home park and the Pacific Coast League in general. Nonetheless, Banda reached the majors and had one excellent start in San Francisco and three rough outings at home against the Nationals, Dodgers and Astros. Unless his secondaries improve, he projects as a No. 5 starter or high-leverage reliever.
After Braden Shipley got the call to the majors last season, Banda took over as Arizona's top pitching prospect. He excelled at the Double-A level, posting a 2.12 ERA and 84 strikeouts across 76.1 innings, which earned him a spot on the U.S. roster for the 2016 Futures Game in July. Banda finished his season at Triple-A, compiling a 3.67 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 73.2 innings for the Reno Aces. Considering how poorly Arizona's major league rotation fared in 2016, Banda could have a shot at a callup at some point during the 2017 season. However, Banda's standing as Arizona's top pitching prospect is probably more a reflection of Arizona's weak farm system than his overall outlook. He's not a top-200 prospect at the moment, and Banda projects as more of a rotation filler than a viable fantasy asset, though a strong run at Triple-A could improve his stock.
