Naji Marshall

Naji Marshall

27-Year-Old ForwardF
Dallas Mavericks
2024 Fantasy Outlook
After four years with the Pelicans, Marshall signed a three-year deal with the Mavericks and will likely be a key bench piece. He ended the 2023-24 season as the 266th-ranked player, averaging 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 0.7 steals and 0.9 three-pointers in 19.0 minutes per game. He should see a similar role in Dallas, albeit with the potential to play slightly more on a nightly basis. He is a great plug-and-play option for the Mavericks, with the ability to fill several roles on both ends of the floor. However, as we have seen throughout his career, that is unlikely to translate into sustainable fantasy value. With that said, an opportunity could present itself at some point during the season, if and when injuries befall those ahead of him in the rotation. Marshall is not worth drafting in standard formats but is worth adding to your potential streamers list. Read Past Outlooks

Marshall closed with 15 points (7-15 FG, 1-6 3Pt, 0-1 FT), three rebounds, three assists and two steals over 34 minutes during Wednesday's 126-116 loss to San Antonio.
ANALYSIS
Marshall continues to play a sizeable role for the Mavericks, scoring double-digit points for the sixth straight game. Dallas is very shorthanded at the moment, meaning Marshall has moved up the ladder when it comes to the offensive pecking order. In his past eight games, Marshall is averaging 18.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 three-pointers.

2021
Despite playing a limited role, Marshall will return to New Orleans, likely playing as a somewhat key piece in their rotation. During the 2022-23 season, he averaged a career-high 9.1 points per game, adding 3.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.7 steals in 23.3 minutes. As a result of injuries to other players, Marshall even started a handful of games and didn't look out of place when doing so. In 21 starts, he compiled 14.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.4 three-pointers in 33.3 minutes per game. He has been able to establish himself as a regular, although he would likely need others to go down for him to have any chance at playing more than about 20 minutes per night. While he isn't worth drafting in standard leagues, he is worth keeping an eye on as a potential streaming consideration.
Despite a few noteworthy performances over the final two months of the 2021-22 season, Marshall is yet to realize his potential, and moving forward, he could be used sparingly off the bench. The Pelicans are building toward being a contender, which will certainly not work in Marshall's favor. Given what we have seen from him in the past, he would need at least 25 minutes per night to even move into the standard league discussion. At this point, that seems like a pipedream, making him a name to gloss over outside of very deep leagues.
After going undrafted in 2020, Marshall latched on with the Pelicans on a two-way deal in December, and his contract was eventually converted to a standard deal in May. The forward appeared in 32 games (10 starts) and averaged 7.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 21.9 minutes. He struggled with his efficiency, with shooting splits of 39/35/71, but Marshall was able to show off his diverse skill set. Ultimately, that allowed him to rank 263rd in per-game fantasy production. While Marshall was able to show interesting potential, he might struggle to find 20-plus minutes regularly again this season, especially if the Pelicans are healthier. It's possible he'll end up the primary backup power forward behind Zion Williamson, but New Orleans could often opt to go small and give minutes to Tomas Satoransky, Garrett Temple and Josh Hart. At this time, Marshall is more of an intriguing dynasty-league option rather than a player worth targeting in redraft formats.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Viewed as defensive stopper
FDallas Mavericks
October 3, 2024
The Mavericks envision Marshall as a defensive stopper in the same role Derrick Jones had in 2023-24, writes Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News.
ANALYSIS
Marshall will see steady minutes off the bench as a backup at the small forward role behind Klay Thompson, and while he might thrive on the defensive end, don't be surprised if he also provides a lift on offense with his three-point shooting. In fact, Thompson was raving about Marshall's shot-making after the first day of camp. "Naji played incredible," Thompson said. "The guy was making floaters, pull-ups. I thought he played really well. I was impressed with Naji. He scored a couple of times on me. His jumper was fluid and his mid-range was nice." Marshall averaged 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 19.0 minutes per game across 66 regular-season appearances in 2023-24.
