Ricky Barnes

Barnes is the typical PGA Tour journeyman. He's had one outstanding season, but outside that year, he's pretty much just trying to keep his card from year to year. Last season was one of his better years on the PGA Tour as he topped the $1 million mark for just the second-time in eight full seasons, which is great for him, but bad for anyone thinking about him in a salary cap format. Barnes simply doesn't have the upside to justify a salary cap selection this year. In draft leagues, he should go in the 10th-round or later.

Barnes finished 127th on the money list but was safely inside the top 125 on the points list at 105. He has been at this for quite a while and only once did he have what can be described as a fantastic season. Even in that season he failed to crack the $2 million mark, so one thing is for certain, is ceiling is not very high. At this point, it looks like any year that results in a card for the following season is a success. Not exactly the type of guy you want in a salary cap league or any other for that matter.

Barnes earned Web.com top-25 status thanks in part to iron-man mentality. He played 23 events in 2013, but only three top-10s and one top-3 finish.

Barnes appears to have everything needed to succeed on the PGA TOUR, but for whatever reason, he just can't seem to put it all together. Since qualifying for the PGA TOUR in 2009, Barnes has managed to keep his card every year, but other than one season where he earned little more than $1.8 million, he's failed to live up to expectations. Barnes has plenty of upside, but considering his peak earnings, he's probably not worth a look in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, he should go near 10th round.

Barnes' career has been quite a rollercoaster. He went from competing as an amateur at the Masters to failing to qualify for the PGA Tour. He worked his way back to the PGA Tour via the Nationwide Tour and all was well after he posted more than $1.8 million in 2010, but he fell back to his old ways last season and couldn't crack $1 million. It's anyone's guess where Barnes goes from here. He likely won't fall off the map, but we might need to adjust our expectations on the high end.

Barnes spent the last five years struggling to stay afloat on the Nationwide Tour and success on the PGA TOUR seemed a far-fetched dream. That all changed last season, however, as Barnes finally tapped into his potential, carding six top-10s and nine top-25 finishes. More impressive was his play at the majors where he finished with a top-10 and a top-30. Barnes could go one of two ways this season, but it appears more likely he'll continue on the path he set last year. Barnes is a solid ball striker and showed a significant improvement in his putting last season.

The return of Ricky Barnes is at hand. Once hailed as the next big thing on the PGA TOUR, Barnes fell flat in his first try and took the long and winding road through the Nationwide Tour to get back to the big stage. He didn't exactly quiet the doubters last season, but he did make it through and has his card for 2010. With a full season on the PGA TOUR under his belt, the success should follow.
