Sangmoon Bae

Bae left the Tour after reaching the Tour Championship at the end of the 2014-15 season to fulfill a 21-month military commitment in South Korea. He has done so, and recently returned to golf in Asia. But he has maintained full status on the PGA Tour under the major medical/family crisis exemption, and he is planning to compete during the fall season. He won the season-opening Frys.com tournament, now the Safeway Open, back in 2014-15, but there was no early word whether he'd be in Napa Valley for the 2017-18 lid-lifter. Bae has two PGA Tour wins (also the 2013 Byron Nelson) and ended 2015 ranked No. 115 in the OWGR. He's now close to No. 2,000. But he also finished 2011 at No. 30, and there was a lot of game there. Bae is only 31, a golfer's prime, so he will be an interesting wild card this season, surely to be picked by someone in your league.

After a solid sophomore season, which followed a strong rookie season, it appeared as though Bae was heading in the right direction. Something went wrong in his third season however as Bae never got on track. The simple fact of the matter is, Bae is better than he showed last year and at this price, he's going to be hard to pass up in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues he should go well ahead of his final position on the 2014 money list.

Bae scored a majority of his earnings from one event last season, which is rarely a good thing. Bae won the Bryon Nelson Championship in May, which account for over $1.2 million of his total of $1.7 million in earnings. He's a good player, but more consistency is needed to justify a pick in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues he should go in the 50-60 range.

Bae started 2012 on fire, but after his hot start, he struggled the rest of the way. That's not usually the case with rookies, as they normally struggle early while adjusting to life on the PGA TOUR, but Bae went about it the opposite way. It's tough to gauge how good Bae is now. After the early season run, it looked like he was the real deal, but he struggled the majority of the year, so it's truly a tough call. At his price, you could take a chance on him and probably face little risk, but don't expect too much out of him this season. In draft leagues, he's an eighth-round pick.

Bae is legit, at least according to his World Ranking, which is No. 30. According to the Japan Tour website, he's 170cm, weighs 77kg and his blood type is A, which could come in handy, you know, if you're ever in a position to provide first aid. Anyhow, not many rookies come to the PGA Tour with a double-digit ranking, let alone one in the Top 30, so Bae should be considered as option on your team this season.
