Agrees to one-year deal
CVancouver Canucks  Minors
July 1, 2024
Smith penned a one-year, two-way contract with the Canucks on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Smith has just 14 games of NHL experience, all with the Coyotes, but has primarily served as a minor-league option. Selected by the Jets in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, the 25-year-old center will be hard-pressed to make the Opening Night roster for Vancouver. Instead, expect Smith to spend the bulk of the 2024-25 season with AHL Abbotsford.

NHL Trade Deadline: Winners & Losers
March 22, 2022
Jason Chen analyzes the fantasy winners and losers from this year's NHL trade deadline. Claude Giroux could get new eligibility with his move from the Flyers to the Panthers.
2022 Fantasy Outlook
Originally a third-round pick of the Jets in 2018, Smith didn't plan on signing with the team and thus would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer, so the team dealt him to Arizona, where he signed a two-year entry-level deal shortly thereafter before making his NHL debut in mid-April. He played in the Coyotes' final 10 games, posting two goals and two assists. Smith was one of the best NCAA players in the country in his final year with Minnesota St.-Mankato, tallying 19 goals and 50 points in 38 games. He's probably ticketed for a bottom-six role this coming year, although the perpetually-rebuilding Coyotes have no reason not to give him ample opportunity to earn a top-six job.
