Closer Watch

Red Sox - On Monday, Andrew Bailey will be activated from the disabled list, as he is seemingly fully recovered from inflammation in his right biceps. His sole rehab outing at Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday did not go swimmingly -- one run, via a home run, and two strikeouts in one inning -- but he is slated to take over as Boston's closer upon his return to the big club, pushing Junichi Tazawa back to a save-deficient role in the bullpen. Consequently, Bailey is the Red Sox pitcher to own for late-inning work, unless of course he falters mentally or physically.

Braves - It is worth noting that Craig Kimbrel pitched in all three games of the Braves' weekend series versus the Dodgers, throwing a typical scoreless frame in each one with seven combined strikeouts. He has now tallied 14 saves on the season, ranking behind just Mariano Rivera and Jason Grilli for tops in MLB, but Kimbrel is expected give way to Luis Avilan or Cory Gearrin, if a save opportunity arises Monday against the Twins.

Cardinals - Closer Edward Mujica is another example of a pitcher who appeared in each outing of his team's series this past weekend. Moreover, he has toed to rubber in five of the past seven contests, notching four saves in the process. He holds an agreeable 1.43 ERA, 0.526 WHIP, and 18:1 K:BB ratio across 19 innings, but his right arm will likely rest Monday, as the Cardinals travel to San Diego to take on the low-voltage Padres offense. His absence would bring Trevor Rosenthal or Randy Choate to the mound to settle any late-inning save chance.

Recommended Pickup

Raul Ibanez, OF, SEA - Channeling his inner 20-homer potential, Ibanez has crushed six homers in eight appearances since May 10, adding 14 RBI and six runs scored in 28 at-bats. While he is in touch with the long ball at the moment, the clip is clearly unsustainable, as evidenced by his 0-for-4 performance Sunday. Still, at the ripe age of 40 years old, the veteran outfielder is manning left field for the Mariners most days, only sitting against the occasional left-handed pitcher. Seattle's center fielder, Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring), will likely return from the disabled list by the end of the week, barring a setback, but Ibanez's recent run has clearly earned him a starting gig for the time being. Ride Ibanez while he's hot.
