Detroit - Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out Thursday's victory over the Rays. Valverde, who is a perfect 38-for-38 in save opportunities this year, has allowed just two earned runs over his last 16.2 innings.
Houston - Mark Melancon picked up his 14th save of the season in Thursday's victory over the Giants. Melancon has been a bit hit-or-miss over the last few weeks, but he'll be the closer the rest of the way and is the favorite to open 2012 with the job.
