Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Philadelphia - Ryan Madson tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader with the Marlins. Madson has been lights-out this month, throwing seven scoreless innings and picking up six saves and a win in the process.

Pittsburgh - Joel Hanrahan recorded the final out of Thursday's game to pick up his 38th save of the season. Hanrahan has allowed more runs in the second half (seven in 25.1 IP) than he did in the first (six in 40.1 IP), but he still owns a sparkling 1.78 ERA and a 57:15 K:BB ratio on the season.

San Francisco - Santiago Casilla picked up his second save in as many days with a scoreless ninth inning in Thursday's victory over the Rockies. Casilla and Ramon Ramirez have shared the closer's role in Brian Wilson's absence, but it now appears that Ramirez will have the eighth inning, and Casilla the ninth, until Wilson returns.

Recommended Pickup

Brandon McCarthy, SP, OAK - McCarthy has had the best season of his career, and he has been at his best since the All-Star break. In 12 second-half starts, McCarthy is 8-3 with a 3.18 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. He has also improved his K:BB rate, whiffing 70 batters and walking just 13 in 79.1 innings over that span. McCarthy is available in a lot of leagues despite the strong numbers, so don't hesitate to grab him if he is still a free agent in yours.

Other recent recommendations:Alejandro De Aza, Salvador Perez, Randall Delgado, Jordan Pacheco, Drew Pomeranz
