Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Atlanta - Craig Kimbrel entered Thursday's game in the top of the 10th inning and struck out three in a perfect outing. He later picked up the win when the Braves won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the frame. Kimbrel has not been automatic the last couple weeks, but he was lights out in Thursday's appearance and now has a 28:8 K:BB ratio in 17.2 innings.

San Francisco - With Brian Wilson unavailable after pitching seven of the previous nine days (and picking up four saves and three wins in the process), Javier Lopez was called upon to shut the door Thursday. Lopez gave up a hit, but he did not give up a run and picked up the save in the Giants' 3-2 victory. After taking the day off, expect Wilson to be available next time the Giants need to hang onto a lead in the ninth.

Seattle - Brandon League blew his second straight save opportunity Thursday and took the loss for the third time in five days. League entered the week with a 2.08 ERA, but after giving up seven runs over his last 2.1 innings, that mark now sits at 5.87. League remains the best option to close in the Seattle bullpen, but after his recent rough patch, don't be surprised if Jamey Wright or David Pauley gets the ball next time the Mariners are in a save situation.

Recommended Pickup

Rick Porcello, SP, DET - After allowing 10 ER in 10.0 IP over his first two starts, Porcello has gotten into a groove on the mound. He did not issue more than two walks in any of his last five starts, and did not allow more than two earned runs in any of those appearances either. Over that five-start stretch, Porcello went 3-0, posted a 1.99 ERA, and compiled a 21:7 K:BB ratio over 31.2 IP. He figures to make two starts next week - at home against Toronto and on the road in Pittsburgh - and is still available in plenty of leagues, so those looking to add a starter for next week's action should give him a shot.

Other recent recommendations: Mark Trumbo, Julio Borbon, Erick Aybar, Mike Fontenot, Vance Worley
