Closer Watch – A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Houston - Mark Melancon picked up the save Thursday with a scoreless ninth inning. Melancon has allowed just one earned run over his last 7.2 innings.

San Francisco - Jeremy Affeldt entered Thursday's game in the eighth inning with a three-run lead, and though the Giants extended the lead to five runs in the top of the ninth, Affeldt picked up the save by closing out the game. Brian Wilson's job is more than safe.

Texas - Neftali Feliz picked up his second save in as many days in the Rangers' victory over the Indians on Thursday. Feliz has tossed two scoreless innings after giving up a run in each of his previous two outings before Wednesday's.

Recommended Pickup

Brian Matusz, SP, BAL - Though he is already taken in many formats, Matusz is still available in about half of both ESPN and Yahoo! leagues after missing the first two months of the season. Matusz was decent in his rookie season, posting 10 wins and averaging 7.33 K/9 IP, and he was sharp in his first outing this year, allowing just one earned run over 5.2 innings. Matusz won't be available in deeper formats, but it is at least worth your time to check and see if a pitcher of his quality is still a free agent in your league.

Other recent recommendations:Ben Revere, Jon Jay, Chris Iannetta, Eric Young Jr. Jarrod Saltalamacchia
