Closer Watch

Toronto Blue Jays – Sabermetricians might have secured their greatest victory in bullpen usage this season north of the border. It seems like ages ago, but Brett Cecil began the month as the Blue Jays' closer. His stint lasted only briefly, as he ceded the role to 20-year-old Miguel Castro just days after the season began. Then manager John Gibbons began blurring the well-defined lines traditionalists love. On April 14, he brought Castro into a tie game in the seventh inning against the Rays. Bringing the young right-hander on in high-leverage, non-save situations may frustrate his owners, but the new school believes it is the correct call. Gibbons seems to ascribe to the idea Castro is most valuable to the club pitching in situations when the game is on the line, regardless of juncture. With that in mind, keep an eye on Cecil. If he can maintain his lofty K rate, the veteran might see some save chances after all.

Recommended Pickup

Mark Teixeira, 1B, NYY – The Yankee slugger's outburst Friday night in the opener of the Subway Series might have prompted an influx of adds, but it really should not have taken a pair of homers for the veteran to be rostered. Always an injury waiting to happen, Teixeira was discounted substantially at the start of this season. At the moment, however, he is healthy and available in as many leagues as he is not. Sage owners will take advantage of the final healthy at-bats of the switch hitter's career and enjoy the ride as he launches bombs over the short porch in Yankee Stadium.
