Boston - With Joel Hanrahan sidelined through the end of April due to a strained hamstring, Andrew Bailey has been provided with the most favorable of circumstances: a window in which to display his wares and potentially swipe a closing gig. Since the aforementioned DL stint commenced, Bailey has appeared in four outings, including a successful save in the two games leading into Saturday. Taking the mound with a 4-2 lead, he immediately served up a solo shot to the first batter in the ninth, the Royals' Lorenzo Cain, and very nearly allowed a second one off the bat of Salvador Perez, until the ball sliced foul just past the right-field pole. In the end, Bailey gathered his third save in as many chances Saturday, but further shaky performances will surely hand the job back to Hanrahan upon his return to the roster.

Recommended Pickup

Daniel Nava, OF, BOS - Slowly but surely, Nava is carving out a near everyday role with his impressive (and new-found) hitting stroke. He has reached base in all but one of the 12 games in which he's appeared in 2013, while batting 4-of-9 in his last three outings. On the year, his lofty line reveals a .342 average with four home runs, 14 RBI, and seven runs scored in 38 at-bats. Nevertheless, the season debut of David Ortiz on Saturday casts a shadow of doubt over the Red Sox's lineup in the coming weeks, as Nava and Jonny Gomes will be striving for plate appearances. At least in the short term, Boston's starting right fielder, Shane Victorino, is enduring lower back tightness, meaning both Nava and Gomes shouldn't have trouble seeing the field. Over time, though, whoever holds the hot bat is likely to man left field. Currently, that player is Nava.
