Closer Watch

Toronto Blue Jays – Since Roberto Osuna recorded a four-out save Sunday, the Blue Jays have played six unspiring days of baseball. In the process of dropping three of four to Boston and the first two games of a road swing in Detroit, the Toronto bullpen has been just one of several disappointments. Steve Delabar, who last received a save opportunity June 24, has allowed five runs over one inning in his last two appearances. It seems unlikely he will receive another crack at closing games for the foreseeable future, so that leaves Osuna in the role of closer by default. The 20-year-old has high-leverage stuff and should make for a much more palatable option than the veteran Delabar, but the Blue Jays – who are just three games back of the Yankees in a wide open AL East – could make a move before the July 31 trade deadline to acquire a veteran reliever to enter the mix for saves. For now, Osuna is the add. Monitor the situation, however, as trade rumors are either dispelled or come to fruition.

Recommended Pickup

Miguel Sano, 3B, MIN – The Minnesota Twins made their third prominent call-up of the season Thursday when Sano followed top prospect Byron Buxton and Eddie Rosario to the majors. Manager Paul Molitor announced the team's intention to get Sano's bat in the lineup and the corresponding decision to play him solely at designated hitter. Sano will not be expected to field a position, as the team wishes for him to focus on providing a middle-of-the-order presence in the middle of its lineup. He hit .274/.374/.544 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI through 66 games at Double-A prior to his promotion, so the power potential could easily be an asset the rest of the way. If he can maintain a palatable average, Sano could make a similar impact for the Twins that Kyle Schwarber made with the Chicago Cubs recently. As Minnesota plays in the American League, however, Sano figures to be in the lineup as DH for as long as he continues to hit this season, as the team has no immidiate plans to send him back down.
