Closer Watch

Cleveland Indians – No reliever has had a more difficult start to the season than Cody Allen. Through 10 innings, the Indians' closer sports a 9.00 ERA. Two particularly difficult appearances skew the data, and manager Terry Francona insists he has plenty of confidence in Allen's abilities to succeed in the ninth inning. Outside of two four-run outings, he has surrendered just two earned runs and has four saves. An impressive K-rate lends itself to a positive outlook, as he's racked up 15 strikeouts in those 10 innings. Furthermore, an absence of virtually any other alternative diminishes the chances of Allen's removal from his current role. Cleveland has no one else in its bullpen with any substantial experience closing games. Nonetheless, Bryan Shaw is a former second round draft pick who the Indians gave a one-year, $1.5 million contract to during this offseason. He likely represents the one member of the Tribe's bullpen with the most to gain from a promotion to the ninth-inning role.

Recommended Pickup

Addison Russell, SS, CHC – Managers in keeper and dynasty leagues are already well-acquainted with Chicago's starting shortstop. The former gem of the Oakland farm system, Russell has gotten lost in the flurry of promotions capped by Kris Bryant's long-anticipated arrival, which became the story of Major League Baseball. After starting slowly, Russell has heated up considerably over the last two weeks. Both of his home runs this season came in the last 10 days, and he is hitting .333 in his last 39 at-bats. A wave of young prospects are making their way to the big leagues this season, but Russell's bat projects as one of the best at his position among the under-25 crowd. It's time to start paying attention to the Cubs' other prospect.
