Closer Watch

White Sox - Six appearances in June have mostly been unkind to closer Addison Reed, who boasts two saves with a 7.88 ERA, 1.375 WHIP, and 10:1 K:BB ratio over eight innings. The most recent flub took place Tuesday against the Blue Jays, when he served up a solo homer with two outs in the ninth inning to knot up the score at five runs apiece. The 21-pitch frame forced manager Robin Ventura to cap Reed at one inning, and the White Sox eventually suffered defeat. Despite a few bumps on the road, Reed has blanked the opponent in 22 of 29 appearances, while ranking fifth in the majors with 19 saves, thereby ensuring his status as the prime ninth-inning option in the team's bullpen.

Blue Jays - On Tuesday, Reed's contemporary in Toronto, Casey Janssen, tossed a clean 10th, earning his 13th save of the season in the process. In actuality, there were a few blemishes -- a single and a walk -- but Janssen was able to escape the contest unscathed by inducing a groundout. After succeeding on all seven save opportunities during the inaugural month of the year, Blue Jays have afforded him the same number since the calendar turned to May, with just one blown save on his game log. While his teammates are sure to pick up the pace, chance-wise, Janssen's finest talent is limiting baserunners as a whole, considering he ranks fourth in WHIP (0.774) and fifth in BAA (.178) among major league pitchers with at least 10 saves in their back pocket.

Recommended Pickup

Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C, BOS - A stable bat in the Red Sox's lineup, Saltalamacchia has actually improved his batting splits in each month this season, with the past couple weeks acting as perhaps his hottest stretch of the year. Since May 27, he has provided at least one hit in nine of 12 outings, including five multi-hit performances, en route to a .347 average (17-for-49), three homers, six doubles, 14 RBI, and eight runs scored. On Thursday, the Orioles are trotting out right-handed rookie Kevin Gausman, who carries an 8.84 ERA and .346 BAA after getting shelled in three of his four nods in 2013. With such a friendly presence on the mound, Saltalamacchia's .326/.379/.605 slash line versus righties bodes well for his potential success.
