Closer Watch

Marlins - Steve Cishek, Miami's closer, amazingly received just his first save opportunity since May 10 on Tuesday, only to blow it immediately by surrendering a leadoff homer in the 10th inning against Philadelphia. He quickly induced two groundouts, but a subsequent walk forced him from the game, as he collected his second blown save (in a measly seven chances) in 2013. In actuality, he is not in danger of losing the late-inning gig, mostly due to a dearth of quality relievers in the Marlins' organization, but Cishek could stand to hone in his control. Since his last successful save, he holds a 4.50 ERA and 5:7 K:BB ratio in 10 frames, which leaves much to be desired.

Mets - Yet another closer was roughed up Tuesday: the Mets' Bobby Parnell. Entering the bottom of the ninth inning with a 2-1 advantage at Washington, he showed little regard for the situation, considering Ryan Zimmerman promptly doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter knocked him home, a double left runners on second and third, and an intentional walk soon juiced the bases. When Parnell finally achieved an out, his left fielder, Mike Baxter, was so out of position that the throw home had no chance of nabbing the Nationals' Adam LaRoche, sending the locals home happy with a walkoff victory. Overall, though, Parnell has total job security, despite the occasional strife, having racked up four wins, nine saves, and a 23:8 K:BB ratio in 24.2 innings this year.

Recommended Pickup

Dan Uggla, 2B, ATL - On the season, Uggla has been nasty at the plate, and not in a friendly sense. In 184 at-bats, he carries a .179/.309/.375 slash line with 10 homers, 21 RBI, and 30 runs scored. Only one aspect of the preceding is desirable -- the long balls -- but his endorsement Thursday is a result of a matchup to be exploited. Versus the Dodgers' scheduled starter, Zack Greinke, Uggla has tallied three hits in six career at-bats with one double and two RBI. Of course, the sample size is small, but because he has reached base in six of his last nine outings, with three hits (but nine walks) in 26 at-bats, he may be primed for his prototypical, but brief, outburst from his home below the Mendoza Line. The matchup is somewhat good and the player is generally bad, but Uggla is the man Thursday.

Other Recent Recommendations:Jonathan Lucroy, Yasiel Puig, Ubaldo Jimenez, Tyler Lyons
