Closer Watch
Cubs -- With Rafael Soriano getting the call to the majors, the potential-closer crowd just keeps growing, but Soriano did put a pair of men on in his season debut. Jason Motte has been a pretty credible closer since displacing Hector Rondon, but his meager 23 strikeouts in 34.2 innings aren't promising. Rondon is probably the best pitcher out of that trio, and he's the best bet to eventually emerge from that trio as the closer.
Braves -- Jim Johnson picked up his seventh save Monday, but it wasn't easy, as he gave up three hits and a run before finishing things off. With Jason Grilli out for the year and a low likelihood of the Braves acquiring another closer, Johnson has a reasonably strong chance to parlay his ninth-inning experience into holding the role for the duration of the season.
Phillies -- Jonathan Papelbon nailed down his 16th save of the year Monday, but it's now likely just a matter of days until he finds a new home. It's awful hard to imagine the Phillies not dealing Papelbon and turning to Ken Giles as the closer, but then again, Ruben Amaro has done a lot of things that are hard to imagine.
Rockies -- John Axford blew the save, then picked up the win Monday. It was just his second failed opportunity of the year, but it's worth noting that his WHIP is starting to look ugly at 1.30; meanwhile, fellow near-retiree LaTroy Hawkins owns a 1.08. Food for thought.
Pirates -- Mark Melancon now has 30 saves to go with a WHIP under 1.00. And you were worried.

Recommended Pickup
Alex Rios, OF, KC – Initial struggles followed by a DL stint got Rios cut to the wire in a lot of leagues, and with good cause – even now, after a significant warming period, his season stats still look hideous. But we don't pick guys up for today's stats; we're looking for tomorrow's, and all indications are that Rios has turned things around and could again be a major fantasy asset in the second half. He's hit safely in eight of his last nine games (and reached safely in all nine), and in that span he's gone 12-for-32 (.375) with a homer, two steals and eight runs scored. Remember, we're talking about a three-time 20-homer man who retains pop and speed even at age 34. Snag him in shallower formats where he's available and enjoy the hype-free stats.
