Closer Watch

Chicago White Sox – David Robertson failed to convert Tuesday's save, putting two on before Josh Donaldson completed a monster night with a walk off home run. It was just Robertson's second blown save of the season and he is not in danger of losing his job.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Kenley Jansen earned his fourth save Monday. He still has not allowed a hit or a walk in five innings since his return.

Seattle – Fernando Rodney somehow still has Seattle's closing job despite his 6.98 ERA through Tuesday. He blew Tuesday's three-run lead in a rough ninth against the Rays. When the Mariners took the lead in the 10th, Joe Beimel came on to pick up his fifth career save. There does not seem to be a contingency plan behind Rodney at the moment.

St. Louis – Trevor Rosenthal was likely unavailable Tuesday after throwing an inning Sunday and two innings Monday. The Cards tried to turn to Matt Belisle for a three inning save, but eventually turned to Seth Maness, who turned in his third rogue save of the season.

Texas – Shawn Tolleson earned his fifth save Tuesday and continued to strengthen his grasp on the closing job.

Recommended Pickup

Kyle Gibson, P, MIN – Gibson has six starts in which he has allowed two or less runs with at least 6.2 innings pitched. He has allowed more than three earned runs just once in his nine starts. The problem is that even though he offers some ratio upside, Gibson's strikeout rate is particularly weak. Gibson rung up eight against the White Sox Sunday, just his second start with more than four strikeouts this season. So the question is whether is an opportunity cost to make up ratios while taking a hit in strikeouts. Throw out Gibson's first start of the season and he has a 1.88 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. To be clear, I am not a proponent of "throwing out" bad starts from evaluations for the reason that the bad start is as much a part of the pitcher as the good starts. However, it is important to note Gibson's worst start was his first start of the season and he has been in a groove ever since.
