Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

DET- Jose Valverde picked up his 41st save in 41 chances against the Indians, pitching a perfect inning. Once again, Valverde didn't record a strikeout. His strikeout-to-walk ratio sits at a meager 1.4, and one has to wonder just how long he can keep up this run without striking out more batters and walking few.

Recommended Pickup

Jerry Sands, OF, LAD - Despite a rough first stint in the majors (.200/.294/.328 in 144 PA), Sands continues to rake in Triple-A, and now has a .278/.344/.586 line in Triple-A. Sure, it's the PCL, but that's big-time power, and with Don Mattingly wanting to get a look at his young players, Sands should get decent playing time down the stretch. Cheap power is tough to find at this time of year, and Sands's .308 ISO (isolated power, SLG-AVG) in Triple-A is impressive at any level.
