Trey Sweeney

Sweeney had a poor full-season debut with Detroit as he could not hit enough to hold onto an every day role. He struck out far too often for someone not hitting for power at the big league level and was overmatched by all pitch types. Five of his six home runs came off breaking balls as have 9 of his 10 major league homers, which speaks to his troubles with the heater. Simply put, his outcomes have yet to match his scouting reports which speak to his raw power and bat speed. The bat speed shows up in the StatCast data, but the raw power is seemingly stuck in batting practice sessions because the outcomes are not showing up in his line scores. McKinstry's breakout 2025 season all but guarantees Sweeney goes back to Toledo to work on making better and more consistent contact to bridge the gap between his potential and his production to date.
