Once a set piece in a team's rotation, Matz spent the last two seasons with the Cardinals and Red Sox in the bullpen, serving in a long-relief role while making the occasional open. Across 53 outings between St. Louis and Boston in 2025, the veteran pitcher recorded a 3.05 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, two saves (out of five opportunities), 13 holds and a 59:11 K:BB across 76.2 innings. He signed a two-year contract with the Rays, and part of his decision to join Tampa Bay was due to the opportunity to be part of the rotation for the 2026 campaign.
