Collins lacks defensive ability, which puts a lot of pressure on his bat to either make up for his shortcomings behind the plate or to be good enough to regularly serve as a designated hitter. Through 459 career plate appearances, that has hardly been the case as he has a 74 wRC+ and .278 wOBA. He had his best opportunity to find a consistent big-league home in 2022 as a member of the backstop-needy Pirates but fell flat and was cut loose in November.
