Williamson looked worn out down the stretch in 2023, which was probably predictable given that it was his first big-league season. An early-September stint on the COVID IL may have also been a critical tipping point. Prior to the diagnosis, the 25-year-old left-hander held a 4.20 ERA and 87 strikeouts through 98.2 innings and was sitting 94-95 mph with his fastball. Following his return to the Reds' active roster, he gave up 12 earned runs and an .858 opponents' OPS across his final four starts covering 18.2 innings, with his fastball velocity dropping into the 91-92 mph range. Williamson will have to compete for an Opening Day rotation spot this spring and aim to rediscover the form that saw him register a 3.15 ERA and 58:16 K:BB in 60 innings (11 starts) between July and August last year.
