Mervis didn't have a clear path to playing time with the Cubs, so being traded to the Marlins in December should open up his big-league opportunities. Mervis only played at first or served as the DH last year in stints with Chicago and Triple-A Iowa. Mervis does still offer some power potential, as he blasted 22 home runs and sported a .932 OPS for Iowa in 2023 before taking a little step backward last year. He's struggled in his brief chances against big-league pitching and has a .481 OPS through 127 plate appearances. Jonah Bride and Deyvison De Los Santos are the current favorites to start at first base and designated hitter, respectively, but Mervis should be able to force Miami to give him a look with a strong showing during spring training.
