A herniated disc in his back limited Matz to just 44.1 innings in 2024, continuing a dubious streak which has seen him make at least one trip to the injured list in all 10 of his major-league seasons. When healthy, the southpaw managed just a 17.4 percent strikeout rate, which was easily his lowest mark over the last seven campaigns. Matz has produced a 2.43 ERA and 27:9 K:BB over 33 innings out of the bullpen over his three seasons in St. Louis and that might be the best route to keep the left-hander healthy and effective at this point.
