Sugano opened the season with a 3.04 ERA and 1.04 WHIP across his first 12 starts, but the warning signs were evident beneath the surface. A 4.43 xFIP reflected a limited strikeout total of 40 and 12 home runs allowed in 71 innings, setting the stage for decline. Over his final 86 innings, his ERA ballooned to 5.97 with a matching 1.57 WHIP. Although his strikeouts increased somewhat, additional walks and a jump in home run rate from 1.5 HR/9 to 2.2 HR/9 erased any benefit. Strikeout limitations were a known risk upon his arrival from Japan, though his reputation for elite control offered some optimism. That control largely carried over, but the inability to suppress home runs did not.
