Austin signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Cubs this offseason, returning to MLB after six seasons in NPB in Japan. The righty-hitting first baseman/designated hitter figures to occupy the short side of a platoon with Moises Ballesteros at designated hitter while also sparing Michael Busch at first base occasionally. Now 34, Austin's best season in NPB was 2024, when he logged a 197 wRC+. His .269/.350/.484 line with 11 home runs and an 18.3 percent strikeout rate in 65 games in 2025 was solid but not spectacular.
