Herrera opened 2024 in Triple-A but eventually reclaimed the top backup catching job during the second half of the season. He's one of four catchers on the 40-man roster and will compete once again to be the backup to Gabriel Moreno. Prospect Adrian Del Castillo and veteran Rene Pinto are also in camp. Del Castillo, who exhibited offensive prowess during a brief callup last year, still has work to do defensively. That benefits a defense-first backstop like Herrera, who has been with the organization since 2014 and is familiar with the staff.
