2025 Fantasy Outlook
After leading the Tigers with 26 saves in 2023, Lange took a step back last season, in part due to injury. He started the year in the mix for saves once again, but he was demoted to Triple-A Toledo in May as he struggled with walks and overall effectiveness. The righty then suffered a right lat avulsion a few weeks after his demotion, which brought his campaign to a close following surgery. Lange is optimistic that he'll be back to full health for the start of spring training, though he's been bypassed by Jason Foley, Tyler Holton and others in Detroit's bullpen pecking order. At his best, Lange has the ability to miss plenty of bats. However, control remains an issue, as he's walked a whopping 62 batters across 84.2 innings since the start of the 2023 season. That won't get it done no matter how many strikeouts he racks up, so Lange will need to display a better command of the strike zone before he regains a high-leverage role. Read Past Outlooks
In midst of shutdown period
The Tigers announced Tuesday that Lange (lat) has been shut down from throwing temporarily and will complete a period of rest after he recently experienced increased upper-arm inflammation, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lange is in the midst of a rehab program for the right lat surgery he underwent last June, so it's less than ideal that he's contending with another arm-related issue during the ramp-up process. On the positive side, Lange wasn't recommended any further treatment for the arm inflammation after seeking multiple medical opinions, so the Tigers are hopeful that rest will be enough to resolve the issue. A timeline for Lange's return likely won't be established until he reaches the point in his rehab that he's facing live hitters, but he won't be available to make his 2025 Tigers debut until at least late May after being placed on the 60-day injured list during spring training.

Lange was outstanding to open 2023, compiling a 1.16 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 32 strikeouts over the first two months of the season. He shared closing duties in April, but took over in May to convert 8 of Detroit's 9 saves during the month. He maintained the role throughout a disastrous June (11.57 ERA), then rebounded, but his struggles persisted in August with more walks (13) than strikeouts (11) over 10 innings. Lange was bypassed for save chances until he improved his control, but he finished the year with a team-leading 26 saves (15th in the majors). His 15.6% walk rate that was 2nd-worst among qualified relievers, but his 39.1% whiff percentage was in the 99th percentile thanks to his elite curveball and effective changeup, while his K-rate was above-average at 27.4%. Lange has a chance to open 2024 as the Tigers closer, but Detroit may look for a more consistent option this off-season.
