After selecting Cordoba with the third overall pick in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft, the Padres were forced to keep Cordoba on the active roster for the entire 2017 season in order to retain his rights. The plan was for Cordoba to return to the low minors and resume a more traditional development path in 2018, but injuries got in the way. He suffered a concussion in a Feb. 7 automobile accident and his symptoms lingered for some time, keeping Cordoba out of competitive action until June. Cordoba never got going with High-A Lake Elsinore, striking out 28% of the time with a 41 wRC+ in 164 plate appearances before succumbing to a thumb ligament injury. The 23-year-old was outrighted off the Padres' 40-man and is a long way from sniffing the major leagues again.
Cordoba was never going to put up an impressive line in 2017, as the 21-year-old shortstop and outfielder was destined to be overmatched as a Rule 5 draft pick who had never even played above rookie ball prior to the campaign. In the minors, Cordoba has displayed an excellent contact-speed combination. As a fantasy player, Cordoba won't be terribly interesting if he winds up in the outfield, as his speed is unlikely to make up for his lack of big-time power. But at shortstop, his ability to hit for average and steal bases would absolutely play. Cordoba will be back in the minors after spending the requisite year on the major-league roster as a Rule 5 pick. Don't expect him back in San Diego for a couple of years at least.
At just 20 years old, Cordoba has completed four full seasons in rookie ball. He posted fairly uninspiring numbers in his first two seasons before putting together a breakout 2015 campaign in which he won the Gulf Coast League batting title and MVP award with a .342/.401/.421 slash line. In even more impressive fashion, the young shortstop followed up his MVP campaign with a better performance in 2016. Moving to the Appalachian League, Cordoba raked to the tune of a .362/.427/.495 line. His .362 average was 15 points higher than the second-best average in the Appalachian League. With a great feel for the strike zone and strong base-stealing ability, he is firmly on the prospect radar even if playing a bit older than his competition. Cordoba switched teams this offseason when the Padres selected him with the third overall pick in the Rule 5 draft. It's not clear if the Padres will keep him in the majors and his age many limit his upside, but Cordoba is definitely trending in the right direction.
