White wasn't likely to see the majors during the closing stretch of the season regardless, but Detroit's need for space on the 40-man roster will allow him to accrue service time while also giving him a nice bump in salary. The 25-year-old struggled to a 5.09 ERA over 40.2 frames in his first taste of the big leagues last season.
