2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Matthews is currently situated as Jose Altuve's backup at second base, but the Astros appear bullish on Matthews as the team's long-term option at the keystone. The Astros probably aren't done making moves this offseason, but general manager Dana Brown noted that Matthews would likely get some run in the outfield in 2026, given how crowded the infield is. Matthews is a great athlete with plus speed and above-average raw power. He slashed .260/.371/.458 with 17 home runs, 41 steals and a 27.9 percent strikeout rate in 112 games in the Pacific Coast League. A .167 BABIP and 42.6 percent strikeout rate led to a .167 batting average and .222 on-base percentage in the majors, but he showed off his tools with four home runs and one steal in 13 games. While Matthews has run high strikeout rates, he makes pretty good swing decisions (23.3 O-Swing%, 63.9 Z-Swing% at Triple-A), he just takes big rips at the expense of contact (67.0 Contact%, 14.6 SwStr%). He is a high-upside rookie for 2026 who is currently blocked on the depth chart. Read Past Outlooks
To play some outfield in 2026
Matthews is still viewed as a second baseman long term, but he'll also play in the outfield in 2026, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
"He's going to get some run in the outfield, but second base is still going to be his main position," general manager Dana Brown said. "We project he'll turn the corner with the bat and get maybe some run in the outfield a little bit, as well." Matthews is situated as a backup option at shortstop and second base, and he would need an injury to Jeremy Pena or Jose Altuve to see significant work in the middle infield in 2026. The Astros probably aren't done making moves this offseason either and could add more outfield options, but Brown and manager Joe Espada were complimentary about Matthews' potential in the short term and long term. 2025 Fantasy Outlook
One of the reasons the Astros tried Jose Altuve in left field is because Matthews has a chance to be the team's second baseman of the future. He has enough power to hit 20-plus homers and enough speed to steal 30-plus bases, Matthews just needs to make enough contact at the plate. He has always run high strikeout rates and there was known hit tool risk when Houston selected him as one of the better athletes among the college hitters at the end of the first round in 2023. Matthews had a 30.2 percent strikeout rate and 15.4 percent walk rate at Triple-A prior to getting the call this summer. He's one of those high-K hitters who doesn't chase much but also swings and misses at too many pitches in and around the zone. Houston should be committed to giving Matthews opportunities next year even if he can't find his footing against big-league pitching in 2025. He is more appealing in OBP leagues than batting average leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set to make MLB debut
Matthews is set to make his MLB debut as the Astros have decided to call him up to their big-league roster Thursday, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
Analysis
Matthews, who was set to play in the All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta, was slashing .283/.400/.476 with 10 homers, 39 RBIs and 25 steals at Triple-A before the call-up. Matthews was a shortstop coming out of college, but he's been playing at second base lately, and he could move into that role in the bigs as well. Matthews is not on the 40-man roster, so the Astros would have to make room on both the 26-man and 40-man rosters for Friday's series opener against the Rangers.
