Brooks was here until he wasn't. Baldwin did hit 15 homers with 22 steals over two levels of A ball in 2023, but struggled to hit for average in Kannapolis before finding something in Winston-Salem. That success carried over into 2024 when he hit .330 between Double-A and Triple-A with eight homers and 17 steals in 82 games before he was promoted to a season-long open tryout in Chicago. The success did not follow him north, as he was rather overmatched at the plate and also struggled with a wrist injury. Baldwin is projected to be the starting shortstop for the White Sox as things stand now, which means he should have the opportunity to show he can rake again until the club promotes Colson Montgomery to shortstop and pushes Baldwin to another spot. There are not a lot of players with upside on the Chicago roster, but Baldwin is one of those players for which a very late dart throw in AL-only leagues could work out well. Read Past Outlooks
Option for starts at shortstop
Baldwin is among the candidates to see starts at shortstop for the White Sox, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Colson Montgomery and Chase Meidroth are back in the minors, leaving Baldwin, Jacob Amaya and non-roster invitees Nick Maton and Tristan Gray as candidates at shortstop in what will be a "mix and matching" situation, per manager Will Venable. Amaya is probably the favorite to see the bulk of the time at shortstop based on his defensive prowess. Baldwin, meanwhile, operated in a utility role during spring training and could continue to bounce around all over the field for the Southsiders.
