2025 Fantasy Outlook
Acquired from the Astros at the 2022 trade deadline, McDermott made his major-league debut in 2024 with a spot start for the Orioles shortly after the All-Star break. Most of his season was spent at Triple-A Norfolk, where he held a 3.78 ERA with 144 strikeouts but also 60 walks over an even 100 innings. McDermott has fanned batters at a robust 33.7 clip during his time in the minors, but that's been undermined somewhat by a 13.8 percent walk rate. The 26-year-old also missed much of the second half last season with a shoulder problem, although he finished the year healthy. McDermott has the stuff to be at least a mid-rotation starter but will need to throw more strikes before the Orioles can trust him with a rotation spot. Read Past Outlooks

Confirmed as starter Wednesday
The Orioles recalled McDermott from Triple-A Norfolk, and he'll start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Twins.
ANALYSIS
McDermott will be making his second major-league start and his first of 2025. The right-hander missed the first month of the season with a right lat strain and has thrown only 9.2 innings in the minors, with his last appearance at Norfolk lasting four innings and 65 pitches. He will have a relatively limited workload versus the Twins and is expected to be returned to Triple-A immediately after the outing.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

MLB debut on tap?
Manager Brandon Hyde wouldn't comment on Baltimore's starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, but McDermott is on the taxi squad and appears set to get the nod, reports Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com.
ANALYSIS
Perhaps Hyde will officially announce the starter following Tuesday's contest, but for now he's showing some gamesmanship. McDermott is one of the Orioles' top prospects and has a 3.96 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 129:54 K:BB across 91 innings with Triple-A Norfolk this year. The swing-and-miss stuff is certainly there, but he'll likely need to improve upon a 5.3 BB/9 in order to succeed in the majors.
