The No. 54 overall pick in this past June's First-Year Player Draft, Mathis will have to wait until 2025 to make his professional debut. As a position player, Mathis won't require the year-plus-long recovery process that pitchers face for Tommy John surgery, but the 21-year-old still may not be fully cleared for the start of the 2025 minor-league season. Mathis could also be limited to playing designated hitter early on in the campaign if he hasn't completed his throwing program by the end of the spring.
