The Twins signed Coulombe to a one-year, $3 million contract Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coulombe missed much of the 2024 campaign following surgery to remove bone chips from his pitching elbow, but he's been excellent over the last two seasons when healthy, collecting a 2.56 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 90:17 K:BB over 81 regular-season innings. He'll be the primary lefty setup man ahead of closer Jhoan Duran.

Stat Review
How does Danny Coulombe compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9

  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.

Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Coulombe didn't make Minnesota's Opening Day roster and was subsequently traded to Baltimore, where he quickly established himself as the team's top left-handed reliever. The 34-year-old doesn't throw very hard - he averaged just 91.1 mph on his sinker - but gave up only 2 hits on the pitch all season. Coulombe's wicked breaking balls were effective as well, with all three pitches inducing 30-plus percent whiff rates, including an 86 mph cutter that he threw 42.5% of the time. This led to career-best marks across multiple categories, including strikeouts (58), WHIP (1.11) and holds (21). The southpaw also ranked in the 87th percentile or better in average exit velocity allowed (85.6 mph, 96th percentile), hard-hit percentage (30.4%, 95th) and walk rate (5.6%, 87th). On the heels of a strong season, Coulombe projects as one of Baltimore's top setup men for 2024.
Coulombe made only 10 appearances last season before he underwent surgery to repair the labrum in his left hip. The left-hander was a solid bullpen piece in 2021 with a 3.67 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 33:7 K:BB across 34.1 innings. He'll compete for a bullpen role this spring and could make the team as a left specialist (career .637 OPS allowed to left-handed batters).
The Sean Doolittle trade thrust Coulombe into a more prominent spot in the A's bullpen and he held his own, earning 13 holds while only blowing one lead. His strikeout and walk rates left quite a bit to be desired -- Coulombe had a 6.8 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 -- but he did a good job of keeping the ball in the yard (0.70 HR/9) thanks to a 56.2 percent groundball rate. Opposing lefties combined for just a .271 wOBA and five extra-base hits against Coulombe (118 batters faced), and Coulombe was excellent at home, posting a 2.25 ERA over 32 innings. The Oakland bullpen is righty-heavy, and Coulombe should once again play an important role in 2018, likely as the top lefty option barring any further offseason additions.
Following a weak finish to the 2015 season, Coulombe spent 2016 shuttling between Oakland and Triple-A Nashville. The lefty failed to break camp with the big league club, and when he did reach the majors, he failed to make a strong case for a full-time spot entering 2017. His 10.2 K/9 was impressive, but his 3.2 BB/9 left much to be desired, and he served up too many home runs for anyone's liking. He posted just a 62.5 percent strand rate, which certainly didn't help matters. There is something good that can be taken from last season though; the 27-year-old's stellar performance with Triple-A Nashville. In 25 innings with the Sounds, he gave up just three runs while posting a 35:6 K:BB. Coulombe still has a bit of developing to do, but his expansive four-pitch arsenal and propensity for missing bats could help him carve out a steady role in the Athletics' bullpen if he can show more command in the coming year.
Coulombe is a rare four-pitch reliever, which has certainly helped in his ascent through the Dodgers' system as he's been able to miss plenty of bats along the way. The Dodgers gave him a taste of the big leagues in September, where he didn't do much to stand out in a tiny sample (4.1 innings). He was then sent to the Arizona Fall League, where he held the opposition without an earned run through four appearances before being shut down. Considering that he skipped Triple-A in 2014 and that he has all of his minor league options remaining, Coulombe seems destined for the Pacific Coast League to begin the 2015 campaign.

Familiarity aided decision
PMinnesota Twins
February 16, 2025
Coulombe said it was a "no-brainer" to sign with the Twins as soon as they made a competitive contract offer, reports Dan Hayes of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander received significant interest in free agency after Baltimore declined his $4 million club option for 2025, and his three previous seasons in Minnesota led to him coming back on a one-year, $3 million deal this winter. Coulombe was limited to 33 regular-season appearances last year due to surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, but he was effective when available with a 2.12 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 32:5 K:BB over 29.2 innings.
