Chicago-Atlanta postponed Wednesday
PChicago White Sox
April 3, 2024
Leone won't start Wednesday against Atlanta after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Chicago.
ANALYSIS
Leone had been scheduled to open Wednesday's game on the mound in what was set to be a bullpen day for Chicago, but as a result of the postponement, the game will be made up June 27. The White Sox will return to action Thursday in Kansas City, with Michael Soroka scheduled to start that contest and Leone set to return to his familiar bullpen role.

Stat Review
How does Dominic Leone compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike
The percentage of pitches that result in a swing and a miss.

Leone re-emerged as a high-leverage option in 2021 with a 1.51 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, two saves and 15 holds across 57 appearances. His flexibility was key to the Giants' pen, as he was capable of pitching multiple innings while working as an opener or closer, though most of his work came in the seventh inning. Leone allowed only six barrels over 145 batted ball events; a 4.1% rate among the best in the league. While his slider was his best pitch (.091 average, 46.2% whiff%), the rigors of a full season forced him to cut his usage of the pitch by 8%. Instead, he relied more on his mid-90s fastball that wasn't as successful, but still effective enough to guide him towards his best season since 2017. Leone is entering his final year of arbitration before he becomes a free-agent in 2023, which always lends to the possibility of a trade. He's likely to work in high-leverage no matter what team he pitches for.
Leone appeared to have the inside track on the closer job at the end of spring training, but some early struggles plus a lengthy absence due to a biceps injury resulted in him finishing the season with zero saves and a 4.50 ERA in 24 innings. His peripherals didn't match those from his breakout 2017 campaign, but he did at least beat the league average with both his strikeout rate (24.5%) and walk rate (7.6%), leading to a solid 3.62 FIP. He didn't pitch particularly well in 11 innings after his return from the disabled list, recording a 4.91 ERA with a 21.6% strikeout rate and a 9.8% walk rate. A bounce-back month could have made Leone an interesting sleeper again heading into this season, especially with the Cardinals' closer situation again unresolved, but as things stand, there are too many question marks to put Leone on the list of top speculative options.
Where did that come from? After a dismal season with the Diamondbacks in 2016 (6.26 FIP), Leone transformed into a back-end relief stud in his first season with the Blue Jays. He gained a tick of velocity on his fastball and upped his cutter usage nearly seven percentage points to 36.0 percent, at the expense of his slider. The right-hander in turn upped his strikeout percentage from 17.6 to 29.0 percent and improved his K/BB from 1.92 to 3.52. His walk rate figures to slide back again given his track record (3.5 BB/9 for career), and his .266 BABIP is ripe for correction, but if Leone can keep the strikeouts, he could eventually challenge for saves following an offseason trade that sent him to St. Louis. He has appeal in holds leagues right out of the gates in 2018 as well as some appeal in deeper standard-scoring formats over less skilled starting pitchers, even when factoring in ratio regression.
Leone bounced between Triple-A Reno and the majors last season, and he posted ugly numbers when he was with the Diamondbacks. He is only entering his age-25 season and has a solid four-pitch mix as a reliever, so he could develop into a quality big league reliever. In 2014 with Seattle, Leone looked promising while striking out 70 across 66.1 innings. He has failed to maintain that level of success in the two seasons since his debut, but Leone continues to intrigue big league teams seeking a young reliever with growth potential. Claimed off waivers by the Jays in November, Leone will be in the mix for a bullpen job during spring training, competing as a dark horse to replace Brett Cecil.
Leone was a nice addition to the Mariners' bullpen last season after his callup in early April. The hard-throwing right-hander mixed as many as four pitches, averaging 94.6 mph on his fastball. He led the bullpen in ERA, though his FIP was nearly a run higher (3.07). Leone had a strong strikeout rate, and excluding his intentional walks drops his walk rate to 3.0 BB/9. He'll be back again this season to pitch in middle relief.
