Avoids arbitration
Underwood signed a one-year, $1.025 million contract with the Pirates on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
In his second season with the Pirates, Underwood reached the double-digit hold mark for the first time in his career and recorded his first career save as well. If the 28-year old can continue to strike batters out at an acceptable rate (8.95 K/9 in 2022) and give up fewer long balls, there's a good chance the Pirates let him pitch more often in high-leverage situations in 2023.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
Underwood continues to battle injury problems, most notably elbow ailments. The 22-year-old tossed just 73 innings in 2016 after throwing only 78.1 innings in 2015. The majority of innings for Underwood this past season came at Double-A Tennessee, where he posted a 4.91 ERA and 46:31 K:BB in 58.2 innings. Perhaps not surprising for a pitcher battling elbow issues and unable to stay on the field, Underwood struggled with his command. Those command problems have been prevalent throughout Underwood's professional career, but the lack of time on the mound certainly didn't help his cause. Underwood's stock has taken a bit of a nosedive entering the 2017 campaign, which will likely start at Double-A, assuming he is healthy. Despite being drafted in the second round in 2012, Underwood has never pitched more than 101 innings in a single season in the minors.
