Smith signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox earlier this month, Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old is expected to open the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Charlotte while serving as organizational outfield depth. While in the Reds system in 2021, Smith spent the entire season at Triple-A, but he saw big-league action with either the Blue Jays and Orioles in each of the prior four years. Over 568 career plate appearances, Smith has produced a .248/.310/.416 slash line (90 wRC+) with 17 home runs, seven stolen bases, 68 RBI and 66 runs.

Smith battled injuries through much of 2019 after being traded to the Orioles last March, and he was unable to lock down a consistent starting role even in the weak Baltimore outfield. Injuries to other members of the outfield allowed Smith to log 392 plate appearances last season, but he ended up hitting .241/.297/.412 with just five stolen bases. Smith has shown some speed potential in the past, but his struggles to get on base limited his stolen-base opportunities in 2019. The 27-year-old's contact rate fell to 77% in 2019, while his walk rate fell to 6.6%. Smith grades out poorly on the defensive side, and there's nothing in the batted-ball profile to suggest there's a next level with the bat. Even a bottom-feeding team like the Orioles will probably find a way to reduce Smith's role further in 2020. They could phase him out completely by midseason.
Smith's capped by being a defensive liability with limited power and speed. He spent 2018 crossing the border between Toronto and Triple-A Buffalo multiple times. With the Blue Jays, Smith posted a .262/.347/.477 slash line in 75 plate appearances, clubbing a pair of homers with no steals. Smith ran more with the Bisons, swiping nine bags in 12 tries while recording a .268/.358/.413 line on the farm. With the standard small-sample-size warnings, the lefty-swinging Smith has posted a .915 OPS facing right-handers in 80 MLB appearances. He'll enter the spring looking to win a roster spot as a reserve outfielder, and won't be fantasy relevant unless an injury opens up regular playing time, likely on the strong side of a platoon.
Smith has shown an ability to draw walks and make consistent contact throughout his time in the minors, but he's limited defensively to the outfield corners and there simply is not enough thump in his bat for him to profile as a regular corner guy at the big-league level. He has maxed out at 15 homers in a season on the farm and has never posted an ISO above .169. He turned in a healthy .370/.414/.444 line in his first cup of coffee in the majors, but it was a minuscule sample (29 plate appearances) and those numbers were driven by a ridiculous .588 BABIP. His numbers over a larger body of work at Triple-A were nothing to write home about, although he did have a .350 OBP thanks to a 10.5 percent walk rate. The fact that he was not brought back in September despite being on the 40-man roster speaks to his standing on the organizational depth chart.
