2025 Fantasy Outlook
Hancock was the Mariners' "sixth starter" last season, mostly filling in for Bryan Woo from time to time when Woo's elbow acted up. He wound up making 12 starts and was thoroughly underwhelming with a 4.75 ERA (5.69 FIP) and lowly 14.7 percent strikeout rate. Control is a strong suit for Hancock, but if you're going to be so feeble at missing bats you'd better generate lots of ground balls and/or soft contact and the right-hander does neither of those things. Hancock has the pedigree of a No. 6 overall pick and former top-100 prospect, but he's never really looked like anything more than a potential back-end starter and his performance thus far at the big-league level suggests he might not even reach that level. Hancock will open the regular season as Seattle's No. 5 starter, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
There was little doubt Hancock would be able to win the job, given the lack of other candidates on the roster, but he solidified himself after allowing just one run on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Rangers. George Kirby (shoulder) is not expected to rejoin the Mariners until mid-April, setting up Hancock to make a handful of starts to begin the campaign. "He's really had a good camp. I think he's really taken a step forward here," manager Dan Wilson said. Even so, the 2020 first-rounder's fantasy upside could still be restricted, considering Hancock fanned a lowly 14.7 percent of the batters he faced over 60.2 innings in 2024.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
Hancock was the sixth pick of the 2020 MLB Draft, and the product of Georgia hasn't shown much consistency in his time as a professional. He was able to reach the majors in 2023, however, and he appeared to have a spot in the Seattle rotation for the remainder of the season until he was diagnosed with a Grade 1-plus shoulder strain in August after making three starts with Seattle. The 24-year-old doesn't have an overpowering fastball, but he commands it well enough to get ahead in counts, and his slider has a chance to be an out-pitch at the highest level. Hancock is not a future ace and he doesn't seem likely to be a part of the Seattle rotation to open the year, but he's a name that's worth keeping an eye on if he does get the chance or he changes organization.
After his sophomore season, Hancock was one of the top candidates to go first overall in the 2020 draft. However, he wasn't quite the same after a lat injury in late 2019, allowing Max Meyer and Asa Lacy to pass him as the top pitchers on most boards. He had a 1.99 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 90.1 innings as a sophomore and a 3.75 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 24 innings as a junior. The 6-foot-4, 213-pound righty's changeup and command/control were among the best in the class. His mid-90s fastball is hittable in the zone because it can be pretty straight, somewhat reminiscent of Pirates righty Mitch Keller. Spotting that pitch in all four quadrants will be paramount to him reaching his ceiling as a No. 2 starter. An above-average slider and average curveball round out his four-pitch mix. He dealt with minor arm tenderness and was limited to a few live batting practice sessions at the alternate site and fall instructs.

Emerson could be a prospect on the move if Seattle emerges as a suitor for Shohei Ohtani at the deadline, writes Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Hancock was the sixth overall selection in the 2020 Draft and currently resides in Double-A. The 6-foot-4, 24-year-old owns a 4.19 ERA across 41 starts with the affiliate over the past two seasons but carries pedigree and upside that could intrigue the Angels.
