Stat Review
How does Fernando Abad compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

When he makes the cut for print in the RotoWire Fantasy Baseball Guide, Abad is often the first player to appear in the A-Z section now that David Aardsma is out of the picture. Over the last eight seasons, the 32-year-old lefty has pitched for five major league clubs, typically working in low-leverage situations. He's never pitched more than 57.1 innings in a season, a career-high total set in 2014 during his first season with the A's, and he's never finished a big-league season with a strikeout rate at or above 9.0 K/9. Abad has collected approximately $6 million during his time in the majors, and he'll look to add to that total by latching onto another 25-man roster this spring. He helped his cause on that front in 2017 by holding right-handed hitters to a sub-.300 wOBA for the first time since 2014. If you're still reading this, we're truly sorry that there isn't anything else interesting to note about him.
Abad was a trade-deadline acquisition by the Red Sox, who were in need of another lefty out of the bullpen. In his first game for Boston, he surrendered a three-run homer to Seattle's Robinson Cano and never fully recovered. He allowed nine runs on 13 hits (two homers) and eight walks in 12.2 innings with Boston and was left off the postseason roster. The sterling year he had with Oakland in 2014 (1.57 ERA) is looking like an outlier. His walk rate has increased in each successive season, an ominous sign for a reliever. There's always a need for lefty arms, particularly ones with these kinds of numbers against same-handed batters: .153 BAA, .195 OBP in 2016. The Red Sox tendered him a contract for 2017 but Abad will need better results to maintain a steady role.
Abad struggled throughout 2015, posting a 4.15 ERA after a sparkling 1.57 ERA in 2014. While his strikeout rate jumped to 8.5 K/9, his walk rate also jumped over a walk per inning up to 3.6 BB/9. The lefty could not keep the ball in the park, allowing 11 bombs over only 47.2 innings. He also had difficulties with lefties, allowing a .859 OPS and seven homers as he went from a guy with no platoon splits to reverse platoon splits. Abad will be in the mix for a spot in the Minnesota bullpen after signing a minor league contract with the Twins, but he'll need to find his 2014 form to stick in the big leagues.
Abad spent his entire season in the majors in 2014 and responded with an excellent campaign in relief for the A's, compiling a 1.57 ERA over 57.1 innings. He excelled when he was asked to come in with men on base, not allowing an inherited runner to score until late August, and he ended the season having allowed only 13% of his inherited runners to score. Abad's lack of a strong platoon split, especially as a lefty, adds to his value as he fared well against righties (.475 OPS) and lefties (.527 OPS) in 2014. He figures to be one of the primary left-handed setup men in the A's bullpen in 2015.
Abad put up decent overall numbers in the Nationals bullpen in 2013, but he wasn't particularly effective as a LOOGY (.790 OPS vs. lefties, .619 vs. righties) and got dealt to the A's in the offseason. He'll likely fill a similar role in Oakland.
Abad got some big league exposure as a left-handed arm out of the bullpen, finding his way into 22 games in 2010. He showed good strikeout numbers in the low minors, but has seen his strikeout rate steadily decline as he has moved up the ladder. He's got a shot to break camp with the team, but will likely find himself ironing out the kinks in the minors to start the season.
