Blows surprise save opportunity
Gibaut (0-1) was charged with the loss and a blown save Thursday against the Giants after giving up four runs on three hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Gibaut was literally the last pitcher added to the Reds' roster after Alexis Diaz (hamstring) was placed on the IL earlier this week, so it was a major surprise he was called upon for the save Opening Day. It's noteworthy that potential fill-in closers Scott Barlow, Emilio Pagan and Tony Santillan pitched the sixth-through-eighth innings, but that still left Taylor Rogers and Graham Ashcraft available. Gibaut had a 3.33 ERA and 23 holds in 74 outings for Cincinnati in 2023, but he has a 4.33 ERA in his MLB career and isn't likely to see consistent high-leverage opportunities.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gibaut earned trust in high-leverage situations early last season and went on to appear in 74 games, which was tied for fifth in the league among relief pitchers. His 75.2 innings were more than his previous four seasons combined and he posted eight wins, three saves and 23 holds. The 30-year-old righty had decent ratios, but didn't strike many batters out and had a below average 8.8% walk rate. Gibaut could use another strikeout pitch to complement his mid-90's 4-seamer and he's been successful with his sweeper in the past, but it's unknown whether a pitch mix adjustment is in store. He's likely to open 2024 in a setup role for Cincinnati, a retooled bullpen could push Gibaut back to the sixth or seventh inning.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Retained by Cincinnati
Gibault is part of the Reds' future bullpen plans, reports Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer.
ANALYSIS
Cincinnati selected Gibault off waivers in June and the 28-year-old produced a 4.67 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 2.67 K/BB in 34.2 innings for the team. He's two years away from arbitration and will make close to the league minimum next year. As he's out of options, the Reds had to choose to keep Gibault on the 40-man roster or protect another minor-leaguer from the Rule 5 Draft. It seems likely that he'll be given every opportunity to secure a spot in the team's bullpen in 2023.
