Jace Jung

24-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Detroit Tigers AAA
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Detroit has started to embrace a youth movement, and Jung's time to get in on the fun could be coming soon. The 24-year-old made his MLB debut in 2024, posting a .241/.362/.304 slash line across 34 games. He mostly served in a reserve capacity, however, as the Tigers used the likes of Matt Vierling, Andy Ibanez and Zach McKinstry at third base, which is where Jung figures to break in. The 2022 first-round pick posted a .939 OPS across 47 games for Double-A Erie in 2023, then recorded an .831 OPS in 91 games for Triple-A Toledo last season, so there is plenty of offensive upside here. Now that he's gotten his feet wet in the majors, Jung could be primed for a more regular role, depending on how the team wants to deploy the versatile Vierling. The Tigers have youngsters Spencer Torkelson, Colt Keith and Trey Sweeney already locked into infield roles, along with Riley Greene, Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez in the outfield. Jung would give the team one more intriguing player with a high ceiling, and fantasy managers should keep a close eye on his playing time. Read Past Outlooks

Optioned to Triple-A

Jung was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
It had seemed like Jung had a good chance of making the team after Matt Vierling (shoulder) was ruled out for Opening Day, but the Tigers will make do with the likes of Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez at third base while Vierling is sidelined. Jung hit .121 with one home run and a 10:4 K:BB in 37 plate appearances in Grapefruit League play.

The younger brother of Rangers third baseman Josh Jung, Jace had a productive season at High-A and Double-A as a 22-year-old, but he surprisingly struggled in a small sample in the hitter-friendly Arizona Fall League. Jung is a fringe-average defender at second base and is essentially a worse version of org. mate Colt Keith, so there is a small margin for error with his offensive development. The lefty hitter slashed .265/.376/.502 with 28 home runs, a 24.2 percent strikeout rate and a 13.7 percent walk rate in 128 games. He only had a .685 OPS with one home run in 15 AFL games. Jung was drafted with the No. 12 overall pick by Al Avila's front office about a month before the Tigers fired Avila in August 2022, so the new regime in Detroit may not give Jung multiple extended opportunities to prove he belongs in the big leagues. He should spend most of the year at Triple-A.
The younger brother of Rangers top prospect Josh Jung, Jace really excelled as a hitter during his time at Texas Tech. He had an OPS over 1.000 all three years and slashed .335/.481/.612 with 14 home runs, 59 walks and 42 strikeouts in 61 games as a junior while routinely being pitched around. Detroit grabbed him with the 12th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. The lefty hitter showcased significant power to all fields while in college. A below-average runner with an average arm, Jung won't be a great defensive option, and he might fit best at designated hitter long term. He gets high marks for his baseball IQ and leadership qualities. Former general manager Al Avila doesn't have many hits to point to in the draft, and Jung's debut was pretty tepid. He hit just one home run in 30 games at High-A with a .102 ISO while being extremely passive and seemingly waiting for the perfect pitch. Given his defensive deficiencies, Jung needs to make a major impact offensively.
