2023 Fantasy Outlook
Herget tallied half of the Angels 16 saves after Los Angeles traded Raisel Iglesias to Atlanta last year. The 29-year-old was spectacular all season, but really shined after the trade with a 1.10 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over 32.2 innings. He finished second on the team with nine saves while adding seven holds across a career-high 69 innings (49 appearances). The right-hander was effective with three of his four pitches, particularly his curveball and slider, but his 91 mph sinker was crushed (.397 BA, .603 SLG) and he threw it far less often as the season progressed. Herget figures to be in the Angels' mix for saves again in 2023, but manager Phil Nevin returns this season and often called his number during high leverage spots earlier in games. Double-digit saves are possible, but don't count on Herget as your primary saves source, as Los Angeles could still add to this bullpen. Read Past Outlooks

In running for closer role
Herget could begin the season as the Angels' closer with offseason signee Carlos Estevez struggling in Cactus League play, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Estevez signed with the Angels in December and was tabbed as the team's potential closer by general manager Perry Minasian early in camp, but the veteran reliever has struggled with a 19.64 ERA and 10 walks over 3.2 innings this spring. Estevez and the Angels have indicated a lack of concern about his Cactus League struggles, but if the team ultimately decides to go in a different direction for ninth-inning work to start the season, Herget would be the logical choice to assume the role. The right-hander was effective as part of a closer committee after Raisel Iglesias was traded last season, tallying eight saves, a 1.10 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP over 32.2 innings. However, Herget hadn't saved any MLB games prior to 2022, so his sample size of success as a closer is relatively small.

2020 Fantasy Outlook
Herget got his first taste of the big leagues in 2019, logging 6.1 innings with Cincinnati and allowing three earned runs. A closer during his first three seasons in the minors, Herget later transitioned to a setup role despite posting promising numbers at the Triple-A level. The right-hander registered a 3.17 ERA with Louisville from 2017-2019 while employing various arm angles and a funky delivery to average over a strikeout per inning. His best pitch is a sinker that sits in the low-mid 90s and is complemented by an above-average slider. Herget does struggle somewhat in the command department -- he posted a 5.57 BB/9 in Triple-A last season -- but he doesn't give up a lot of home runs and can handle the pressure of pitching with men on base. Herget was DFA'd by both the Reds and Rangers in the offseason but could still challenge for a bullpen spot wherever he ends up in 2020.
