Contrary to a prior report, Camargo has not signed a minor-league deal with the Twins, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Twins listed the wrong "J. Camargo" on their transaction page, when in fact they just re-upped on a minor-league deal with catcher Jair Camargo. Johan Camargo is still a free agent.

Stat Review
How does Johan Camargo compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG
Batting average. Hits divided by at bats.
  • OBP
On Base Percentage. A measure of how often a batters reaches base. Roughly equal to number of times on base divided by plate appearances.
  • SLG
Slugging Percentage. A measure of the batting productivity of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats.
  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Expected BA
    Expected Batting Average.
  • Expected SLG
    Expected Slugging Percentage.
  • Sprint Speed
The speed of a runner from home to first, in feet per second.
  • Ground Ball %
The percentage of balls put in play that are on the ground.
  • Line Drive %

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2019
2018
The 2018 season was a fun one for Camargo and his managers, but that season has been the one shining moment for him in a four-year career that has seen a statistical freefall the past two seasons. After that peak in 2018, Camargo's offensive output has severely tapered off to where he has become a below-average offensive producer. This past season was marred by impatience at the plate not seen since his rookie season of 2017 and the worst strikeout rate, by far, of his career. Expected stats validate his actual performance with the only area of upside being his defense, as he is an excellent defender with positional flexibility at second and third base for 2021 drafts. Do not let that positional flexibility suck you in to doing anything other than spending an endgame pick on him in NL-only formats, because the upside in his offense is very tough to see.
Camargo went from being 16% better than league average at the plate by wRC+ in 2018 to 33% worse than league average in 2019. After the Braves signed Josh Donaldson last winter, the team said Camargo was slated for a "Marwin Gonzalez-type role," and indeed he did play semi-regularly early on. However, he simply could not get going at any point, his playing time dwindled and Atlanta demoted Camargo for a couple weeks at the end of August. He made more consistent contact in 2019, lowering his strikeout rate to 17.3%, but walked less and the quality of his connections deteriorated. His hard-hit rate was in the bottom 30% of the league and he had only seven barrels among 190 batted-ball events. Granted, Camargo was never lighting up the Statcast leaderboards even when things were going well. Assuming he's fully over the fractured shin that ended his 2019, Camargo should be back as the team's top utility man.
Even after Camargo hit close to .300 over 82 games as a 23-year-old in 2017, few were excited about his prospects heading into spring training last year. A back/oblique issue popped up in mid-March and forced Camargo to the DL to start the season, taking him off the mixed-league radar almost entirely. Once he turned the page on that injury, he was quite good, finishing with more earned value than the likes of Justin Turner, Rafael Devers or Kyle Seager at third base. He was 15% better than league average at the dish with a near-double-digit walk rate and .185 ISO, and was a significant plus on defense. Camargo raised his flyball rate close to five percentage points to 35.4% and increased his hard-hit rate, though he had just a 19.8% line-drive rate and 16.5% infield-flyball rate, making the average seem unsustainable. Still, Camargo established himself and he is expected to maintain a sizable role even after the addition of Josh Donaldson.
Injuries at third base and a disappointing sophomore campaign from Dansby Swanson opened the door for Camargo to appear in 82 games on the left side of the infield for the Braves last season. A 24-year-old switch-hitter, Camargo's defensive versatility is his greatest asset as he attempts to carve out a role with Atlanta in 2018. If the organization forgoes adding a veteran stopgap at the hot corner to bridge the gap to prospect Austin Riley, Camargo may wind up in a competition with Rio Ruiz for playing time throughout the season. Thus far, Camargo hasn't shown much home-run power, but it's worth noting that he showed doubles power with the Braves and slugged .452, after failing to slug above .380 in his previous four seasons in the minors. The lack of homers, steals and walks will make his fantasy appeal hinge entirely on his lineup placement and his ability to hit for average.
