Stuck with third loss
PSt. Louis Cardinals
August 28, 2024
King (3-3) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk over one inning to take the loss Tuesday versus the Padres. He did not record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
King got the last out of the sixth inning in relief of Miles Mikolas, but he then stumbled in the seventh. Since the All-Star break, King has a 5.11 ERA and 5:3 K:BB over 12.1 innings while taking two losses and one blown save. While he is regressing, this has still been his best major-league season -- the southpaw has a 3.10 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 32:8 K:BB across 39.1 innings while adding seven holds this year.

Stat Review
How does John King compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9

  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
A strong spring combined a bevy of injured relievers landed King a spot in the Rangers opening day bullpen. He hurled 46 frames before being sent to the IL with shoulder inflammation. After recurring soreness during rehab, King was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome requiring season-ending surgery in September. The 27-year-old righty should be ready for spring training where he'll vie for a job in Texas' revamped bullpen. King is a groundball specialist with a low walk rate, but a pedestrian strikeout clip. He profiles better as a multi-inning reliever than high-leverage guy, obviously depending on this recovery. King is a longshot to be in the saves mix, but he should collect a few holds.
King was surprisingly called up by the Rangers in September of 2020 to make his major-league debut, and he performed relatively well considering that he hadn't pitched above High-A earlier in his career. He made six relief appearances for Texas, posting a 6.10 ERA over 10.1 innings. His 4.27 SIERA and 4.87 xFIP were more encouraging, and he had a solid 55.6 GB% over his limited sample. King's 17.6 K% left something to be desired, but he should continue to develop in that area as he continues to face off against higher levels of competition. The 26-year-old filled middle innings for the Rangers in 2020, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be entrusted with an Opening Day roster spot in 2021 given the significant jump that he made last season. Even if he does remain in the majors, King doesn't hold much fantasy value heading into the season due to his middle-relief role and middling strikeout numbers.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could remain with Rangers
PNew York Yankees
July 28, 2021
King (shoulder) could remain with the Rangers after it was originally reported that he was traded to the Yankees on Wednesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
King was reportedly heading to New York along with Joey Gallo. However, revised editions of the trade instead have the Yankees acquiring Joely Rodriguez. King has been effective out of the bullpen for the Rangers to this point in the season, maintaining a 3.52 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 40 strikeouts across 46 innings, though he is currently sidelined by a shoulder injury. The full trade is expected to be finalized either late Wednesday night or Thursday.
