Jonny DeLuca

26-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Tampa Bay Rays
2025 Fantasy Outlook
DeLuca was part of the return in the Tyler Glasnow trade and was supposed to be a reserve outfielder along the lines of Sam Fuld of Tampa Bay lore. DeLuca was pressed into duty early in the season and it initially looked as if DeLuca was going to take the Super Sam Fuld cape off the mantle at Tropicana Field as he had 10 RBI and three runs scored in his first week with the club. DeLuca went on to hit .211/.273/.315 the rest of the season, going 14 of 20 on the bases and drove in just 21 more runs in his final 346 at bats. DeLuca has shown the ability to hit throughout the minor leagues as well as accept his walks, but his career line of .222/.281/.342 in just over 400 major-league plate appearances does not exactly portend better days are coming. DeLuca has value in AL-Only formats, but overexposing him as a regular exposes his limitations. Read Past Outlooks

Stat Review
How does Jonny DeLuca compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP

  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Expected BA
    Expected Batting Average.
  • Expected SLG
    Expected Slugging Percentage.
  • Sprint Speed

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
Deluca got his first taste of the majors last season, slashing a respectable .262/.311/.429 with two homers, six RBI and a stolen base over a 24-game, 45-plate-appearance stint. The 25-year-old also showed well between Double-A and Triple-A with a .956 OPS, 17 homers, 53 RBI and 12 steals across 73 contests, and he's hit well in each of his minor-league stops, giving him little left to prove on the farm. It remains to be seen how well his minor-league power will translate in the big leagues, but Deluca is an exceptional athlete with a background in track (per Statcast, his sprint speed ranked in the 97th percentile last year) and an excellent glove. His ability to play all three outfield spots likely appealed to Tampa Bay when they acquired him from the Dodgers in the Tyler Glasnow trade. Deluca represents a premium short-side platoon option with the talent to expand his role if more playing time opens up.
DeLuca, a 25th round selection in 2019 out of Oregon, showed enough promise last season to earn a spot on the Dodgers' 40-man roster before reaching Triple-A. He hit .259/.347/.539 with a 16.6 K% and 10.2 BB% in 440 plate appearances across High-A and Double-A. The Dodgers say he is one of the best runners in their system, and with an 8.8 (out of 10) Spd score on FanGraphs and 17-for-19 success rate on the bases, it's safe to assume he is at least an above-average runner. His 29.4 Hard% and 18.3 Soft% were fine for an athletic player with an excellent command of the zone. DeLuca hit better against lefties (1.001 OPS) than same-handed pitching (.847 OPS), but he only struck out 17% of the time against righties and still did plenty of damage. He is heading into his age-24/25 season, so it wouldn't be surprising if DeLuca made his big-league debut, even if it's in a minor role initially.
