2025 Fantasy Outlook
Acquired from Cleveland last year in the Lane Thomas deal, Tena got a look in Washington over the final two months, mostly at third base (35 games). He smacked a walk-off hit in his team debut Aug. 10 and finished with a respectable .274 average, three homers and six steals in seven attempts across 164 plate appearances for the Nationals. Tena has some speed and has reached double-digit homers in the minor leagues several times, but it will be tough for him to stick at the hot corner long term given the general offensive expectations at the position. Realistically, he may be best suited for a utility role, but as he enters his age-24 season in 2025, Tena appears tentatively set for an extended audition as a lineup regular between third base and second base. Competing for third base job
Tena will battle with Trey Lipscomb in spring training for the Nationals' starting job at third base, Bobby Blanco of MASN Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Tena showed some upside at the plate after being acquired from the Guardians in the Lane Thomas trade last year, slashing .274/.305/.363 over 41 games for the Nats with three homers and six steals in seven attempts. The 23-year-old mostly played shortstop in the minors however, and defensively he has a lot of work to do at the hot corner, committing nine errors on only 87 chances. Lipscomb has the stronger glove, but he stumbled to a .500 OPS in 61 big-league games in 2024. If Tena shows enough improvement in the field during camp, he'll be the favorite to get the nod at third base in the Opening Day lineup. Prospect Brady House could also get a look this spring, but he likely needs more development time at Triple-A before he'll be ready to take over the job.

Recent RotoWire Articles Featuring Jose Tena See More

Todd Zola explains how projected playing time and a skills-based approach helps him identify upside plays late in a draft, as well as leading him to put Aaron Judge at the top of his personal rankings.
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Tena climbed three levels in 2023, culminating in his major league debut receiving 34 plate appearances and slashing .226/.294/.290 in 18 games played. Tena's bat played much better in both Double-A and Triple-A, combining for 35 extra base hits, eight of which were home runs, and 16 steals across the two levels of the minors. If the 22-year-old breaks camp with Cleveland, he should be viewed as a utility option at best with the capability of playing multiple infield roles, but no clear path to starting at any of them.
