Fuentes signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Fuentes hit .243/.269/.377 for the Rockies in 149 games from 2019 through 2021, good for a wRC+ of 56. He struggled to a .405 OPS in 29 games for Triple-A Buffalo in the Blue Jays' system last season before being cut and finishing the year in Mexico. Heading into his age-30 season, he's a long shot at best to break camp in the majors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could become starting first baseman in 2021
1BColorado Rockies
October 14, 2020
Fuentes might be the starting first baseman for the Rockies as soon as next year, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Fuentes impressed during the shortened 2020 season and might be considered as the front-runner for the role next season unless the Rockies decide to sign a slugging first baseman in free agency. Fuentes might lack the power that's expected from the prototypical player at the position, but he possesses enough gap-to-gap power and a good eye while also providing above-average defense.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2019
Fuentes got his first taste of major-league action in 2019, but he had more consistent results during the 2020 season. He posted a .306/.320/.439 slash line with 17 RBI over just 30 games. He didn't have much pop in his bat, logging a 28.2% hard-hit rate and 1.4% barrel rate, but he put the ball in the right spots with an astonishing .406 BABIP. Heading into his age-28 season, Fuentes needs to work on his patience, as he sputtered to a 28.2 K% paired with a 1.6 BB%. He exhibited slightly better vision at the plate in 2020 with a greatly improved 86.9 Z-Contact% and 13.2% swinging-strike rate. However, he still swung at 40.4% of the pitches that he saw outside of the zone. Fuentes will likely serve as the Rockies' Opening Day first baseman and presents some intrigue as a batter with home games at Coors Field. However, Fuentes didn't exhibit much power in 2020 and doesn't benefit much from the altitude.
Fuentes received the first 56 plate appearances of his major-league career last season but hardly covered himself in glory, hitting .218/.232/.400 while striking out 20 times and walking just once. He regressed at the Triple-A level as well, hitting just .254/.298/.448 (73 wRC+) for Albuquerque after hitting .327/.354/.517 (124 wRC+) there the season prior. Heading into his age-27 season with no success at the big-league level, Fuentes seems to be a long shot to play a significant role this year. He was never a particularly highly-rated prospect, though he does at least have decent power. Any player who gets a run of starts in Coors Field is at least moderately interesting, particularly those who can hit the ball out of the park, but there's just not enough of a track record here to believe Fuentes will get an extended opportunity.
Fuentes was best known as Nolan Arenado's cousin heading into 2018, but he made a name for himself last season, garnering Pacific Coast League MVP honors in what was his first taste of Triple-A. The infielder earned the award by slashing .327/.354/.517 with 14 homers and 95 RBI in 135 games for Albuquerque. He continued to impress in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .301/.356/.482 with three homers in 21 games. Fuentes could stand to improve his plate discipline, as he walked in just 3.6% of his plate appearances while striking out in 17.6%. He's primarily a third baseman, though Fuentes also spent time at first base in 2018. He's blocked at both positions at the major-league level, so Fuentes figures to head back to Triple-A to open the 2019 season. He was added to the team's 40-man roster for Rule 5 protection in the offseason, making him a candidate to make his major-league debut at some point in 2019.
