22-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Chicago Cubs
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Alcantara got a cup of coffee with the Cubs in 2024 to make his MLB debut. The 22-year-old saw action in three games and recorded one hit across 10 at-bats. He was much more productive in the minors, where he sported a .781 OPS while posting 14 home runs and 61 RBI across 111 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Alcantara also chipped in 14 stolen bases, showing off a good combination of power and speed at a young age. He's a good athlete with some definite upside, though he finds himself in sort of a crowded outfield situation. The Cubs have Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki seemingly locked into starting spots. Cody Bellinger is also on hand to play some outfield and DH, while veterans Mike Tauchman and Patrick Wisdom also provide depth. Alcantara could potentially supplant the latter two if Chicago wants to go younger, but the other players should all have sizeable roles. That could push Alcantara down to Triple-A again to begin the season. Still, he's a player worth keeping an eye on down the road. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Alcantara, 22, has slashed .278/.353/.428 with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season. He's one of the Cubs' most physically-gifted prospects, although questions remain as to how much he'll ultimately hit. It's not clear how frequently Alcantara will play this week, but there could be a path to at-bats if Seiya Suzuki's ankle injury Tuesday forces him to miss some time.

Stat Review
How does Kevin Alcantara compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2022
Very little about Alcantara has changed over the past couple minor-league seasons. He remains a premium athlete in a 6-foot-6 frame with power, speed, patience and a questionable hit tool. Alcantara has essentially moved through the minors at a one level per year pace, but he finished 2023 on a heater after missing time with a leg injury and got a brief taste of Double-A after spending most of the year at High-A. Once the weather at South Bend warmed up, Alcantara got going at the plate, slashing .313/.391/.521 with 10 home runs, five steals and a 23.4 percent strikeout rate in 66 games from May 27 on. He has the arm for right field, and his above-average speed could allow him to be a plus defensive outfielder in a corner. He may even be able to stick in center field despite his size. Alcantara had seven strikeouts in his first five games at Double-A, and his strikeout rate in a return to that level will be the key to whether he climbs up rankings or stagnates.
Alcantara, the centerpiece of the return for Anthony Rizzo in 2021, had to be added to the Cubs' 40-man roster this offseason and has yet to play above Single-A. He is a toolsy 6-foot-6 outfielder with some swing-and-miss, so it's not necessarily a disappointment that he hasn't climbed higher through the system, but the clock is ticking. His 24.8 K% and 71.3 Contact% aren't horrible marks for a player with plus power and above-average speed, but Alcantara's hit tool is not a strength at this stage. He slashed .273/.360/.451 with 15 home runs and 14 steals in 112 games last season and has significant pedigree dating back to when the Yankees signed him out of the Dominican Republic in 2018 - so his trade value in dynasty leagues is still solid. However, it's possible that he hits a wall at High-A or Double-A, which would be problematic given that he is now on the 40-man roster and won't be overly young for those levels. There's upside here, but it might not be a bad offseason to cash him out.
The centerpiece of the Cubs' return from the Yankees for Anthony Rizzo at last year's trade deadline, Alcantara has always had tantalizing physical tools, and they were on full display in the Florida and Arizona complex leagues. The 6-foot-6 center fielder hit .345/.423/.588 with five home runs, five steals, a 26.1 K% and a 12.3 BB% in 34 games. Unlike most complex-league standouts, this was not Alcantara's first foray into stateside ball, as he played 32 Gulf Coast League games as a 17-year-old in 2019, registering a .647 OPS. At 19, he was a tad old for a rookie-ball hitter this past season, but he really looks the part. Alcantara has the type of elite athleticism and power/speed upside that dynasty managers are always chasing. Given his size and stats to date, we should assume Alcantara will always run high strikeout rates, but as long as he keeps taking his walks and doing damage when he connects, the sky is the limit.
